HBO's 'House of the Dragon' explained, episode by episode Los Angeles Times

A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011–2019), it is the second television series in the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik served as the showrunners for the first season. Based on parts of Martin's 2018 book Fire & Blood, the series begins about 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen conquest, nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen.

Ser Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale) will step up as Castellan of Harrenhal, Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox) will surface as Otto Hightower’s son, and Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim) will follow up on his work in the Stepstones campaign. Millie Alcock and the rest of the first-generation Targaryens and Hightowers will, as far as HBO has indicated, not be returning this season in flashbacks. That doesn’t mean that we won’t see them again someday, but at least Paddy Considine does not have to jeopardize his own health for another stunning performance that the awards circuit decides to ignore. As their forebears battle for control of Westeros’s Iron Throne, what do you need to know about the new series, and its connection to what has gone before — or, more accurately, after?

These include Martin, who wrote the books that form the basis of both shows — the “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels for the original series and the prequel book “Fire & Blood” for the new one. Over the course of the series viewers could see up to 17 different dragons. As they are introduced, be sure to visit the Official Dragon Index for a quick look at which dragon is which. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen.

More to explore

In one corner, Rhaenyra Targaryen had been named rightful heir by her father. On the other side, Aegon Targaryen II had been erroneously elevated to king after his wife, Alicent Hightower, mistakenly interpreted King Viserys’ deathbed ramblings. But Sapochnik, the other showrunner, directed several of the most memorable “Thrones” episodes, including “Hardhome,” “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Bells.” The composer Ramin Djawadi returns, as do unmistakable elements of his “Thrones” theme music. That’s the question explored by “House of the Dragon,” the new series set in author George R.R. Martin’s revisionist epic-fantasy world. Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, this epic series tells the story of House Targaryen. Creators Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik also responded to criticism at the time  ...

From that period, House of the Dragon brings us back nearly 200 years to the time in Westerosi history when House Targaryen was at the height of its power. The series begins with the reign of King Viserys I, the fifth Targaryen ruler, the question of his succession, and the events that unfold after he names his daughter, Rhaenyra, heir — a title a woman had never assumed. Yes, the series is a prequel with Ryan J. Condal (Rampage and Hercules) and Miguel Sapohnik (whom you may remember from Game of Thrones favorite episodes “Battle of the Bastards,”“Hardhome,” and more) at the helm. Author George R.R. Martin is also actively involved as an executive producer. Set centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon tells the story of House Targaryen, the legendary family who ruled the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. The series follows the Targaryen's journey from their beginnings as the last family of dragonlords to their eventual downfall, leading up to the events of George R.R. Martin's book "Fire & Blood".

With such deliberate pacing, House of the Dragon is poised for at least one more season and in all likelihood many more. Following the events of House of the Dragon Season 1 and the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, the world of Westeros is heading for a full-on civil war for the Iron Throne, known by most as the "Dance of the Dragons." With that said, this series has been plotted out for four seasons, and that plan could change, but it’s unlikely that we will see the entire war take place in Season 2.

According to Variety, the Season 2 production will go unaffected by Hollywood's ongoing writers' strike as all scripts were completed before production. Executive producer Ryan Condal supposedly remained on set in a strictly non-writing production with no editing, no network notes, and no writing. Though all this required new technologies and incredible levels of computing power, the freedom of the virtual camera in the hands of the cinematographer and director, and the length of the shots now possible, allowed a more instinctive, even human, approach. It took multiple effects houses and multiple processes to weave together the season’s payoff sequence. Visit the mythical world of Westeros, the Targaryen Dynasty, and the dragons that ruled beside them. Attendees will be the first to see new costumes and props from the series and have the chance to sit on a replica of the new Iron Throne. It appears House of the Dragon will likely run for four seasons, although the reduced episode count could see the story expand into Season 5.

A few days after you completing The Gift of Giving, you'll be approached by an older woman named Diana near the slums. She'll ask you to visit her in the Noble Quarter, and a house will become marked. Head to the house and you'll meet Diana and a young boy named Sebastian. They'd like you to bring Daphne to the house, due to her resemblance to Sebastian. Targaryens have traditionally been shown as white with blonde hair -- so, the inclusion of Black actors in these particular roles has received some racist vitriol online.

Hopefully, we will at least see the inevitable showdown between Daemon and (Mini-Me) Aemond, and if that plot point follows the Fire and Blood book, both men should be very afraid. Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik serve as showrunners and executive producers.

The series premiered on August 21, 2022, with the first season consisting of ten episodes. Five days after its premiere, the series was renewed for a second season. Sapochnik departed as showrunner after the first season, leaving Condal to serve as the sole showrunner for the second season. The second season is set to premiere on June 16, 2024, consisting of 8 episodes.

The first season received highly positive reviews, with praise towards its character development, visual effects, writing, score by Ramin Djawadi, and performances. However, the pacing, specifically of the time jumps, and the dark lighting of some scenes were criticized. The series premiere was watched by over 10 million viewers across the linear channels and HBO Max on the first day, the biggest in HBO's history. At the 80th Golden Globe Awards, House of the Dragon won Best Television Series – Drama and D'Arcy was nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama. The series earned nine Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and won three British Academy Television Craft Awards. House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO.

Featuring an ensemble cast, the show portrays the events leading up to the beginning of the decline of House Targaryen, a devastating war of succession known as the "Dance of the Dragons". Thus far, the series has been working loosely off author George R.R. Martin’s doorstopper textbook Fire & Blood, a history book of sorts for Westeros and the Targaryens. The book includes all major events of Season 1 and the subsequent history, the events following the death of King Viserys I, including the ensuing civil war.

The first thing “House of the Dragon” visual effects supervisor Angus Bickerton discussed with showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal was — surprise — the dragons. The show’s predecessor, “Game of Thrones,” set new standards for the photoreal monsters; it won seven visual-effects Emmys, after all. Before George R.R. Martin’s Westeros endured the Game of Thrones, Aegon the Conquerer set up his House of Targaryen to rule the Seven Kingdoms. Now, HBO is gearing up to show us the mayhem that happened when this house splintered into two sides that each claimed the Iron Throne.
